Huerantine 28 - 9BFF0D, warrior queen Amina of Zazzau. I’m actually a bit of a history junkie, and I also love powerful women so I decided to combine the two in a series called Long Live the Queen. I made a list of 50 historical queens, 10 from Africa, 10 from Asia, 10 from the Americas, 10 from Europe and 10 from Oceania. Let me tell you it was NOT easy finding pre colonization queens, especially in the Americas and in Oceania, but I managed. It’s really eye opening because there’s literally so much culture and history that was destroyed with colonization. But anyhow, Queen Amina was a Hausa warrior queen. Her kingdom would’ve been in what is now Nigeria. She is a historical figure and there’s a statue of her in Lagos. I tried to keep the elements that I was able to find but I took some liberties, especially designing the jewelry. I did a little research and found the predominant jewelry of the region is beaded, so I painted her with extravagant jewelry because that’s my preconceived idea of a queen, even a warrior queen. Anyhow, go read up on Amina. More queens will come.
